Brooksville child nearly drowns in pool

Brooksville, Florida -- A child is fighting for his life after nearly drowning in a pool on Mother's Day.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says a family was visiting a home on Gordon Loop in Brooksville and was invited to use the swimming pool. An adult and a 3-year-old, identified as Hayden Somerstein, were in the pool area when the adult decided to go to a nearby shed to retrieve an item.

Authorities say the adult thought Hayden was following close behind, but when the adult realized he was not in or around the shed, they immediately checked the pool. Hayden was found at the bottom of the pool.

The adult immediately removed him from the pool and called 911. Deputies and fire rescue crews arrived and performed CPR.

As of Monday, May 12, Hayden was in critical condition at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

The case remains under investigation.
