Deputies shoot man threatening to burn down home

Brooksville, Florida -- A man suffered life threatening injuries after investigators say he was shot in a confrontation with Hernando County Sheriff's deputies.

The Sheriff's Office says a call came in Thursday morning about a possible arson at a home on California Street in Brooksville. The man who lives at the home, 69-year-old James Quenton Palmer, allegedly said he was being evicted and was now going to set the residence on fire.

Arriving deputies found the home completely engulfed in flames. Based on initial reports, Palmer confronted the deputies and was "extremely aggressive." The Sheriff's Office says the situation escalated to a point where deputies were "forced to engage the suspect with deadly force."

Palmer was airlifted to a trauma center with life threatening injuries. No other details were made available about the shooting.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is taking over the investigation, and the Hernando County Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs will also review the incident.
