Nursing home beating victim dies

Brooksville, Florida -- An elderly man who was allegedly beaten by a security guard at an assisted living facility has died from his injuries.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says on Saturday, 83-year-old Joseph Giambrone succumbed to injuries he sustained in the brutal attack. He had never regained consciousness after the beating.

Detectives say they are working with the State Attorney's Office to determine if further charges will be filed against the suspect, 22-year-old Brian Christopher Murphy. Murphy currently faces two counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

The other beating victim, 88-year-old Miriam Lepp, continues her recovery from the attack.

Investigators say that shortly after midnight on March 27, Murphy entered Atria Evergreen Woods assisted living facility, where he worked as a weekend security guard. When he got inside, Murphy allegedly entered Giambrone's and Lepp's rooms and attacked them with a blunt object.

A nurse alerted security and the guard on duty engaged Murphy and his immediate actions prevented further injury to residents and staff.

Arriving deputies found Murphy attacking the security guard. They took hold of Murphy and were able to take him into custody.
